Opportunity offers current Grand Valley State University junior chance to experience Indiana state government

(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Emma Winton-Smith of Royal Oak is currently completing his office’s 2010 Fellowship Program. The summer-long program selects college and university students and allows them the opportunity to experience state government first-hand through the Secretary of State’s office.

“Emma is an individual who will help guide our state and country with her desperately-needed leadership and innovation in future years and I’m thrilled to have her here. She is a valuable addition to our office,” said Secretary Rokita.

Winton-Smith is currently pursuing a degree in Elementary English Education. She is a member of Delta Zeta sorority and in her free time she enjoys music, reading and meeting new people.

“I am most looking forward to learning more about the government, specifically the governmental side of education,” said Smith. “I also would like to broaden my knowledge of the different areas of government.”

As a fellow, Winton-Smith will have the opportunity to meet personally with politicians and state officials to learn how the governmental side of education makes it possible for young children to get the education deserved.

“I am a full believer that children are our future. I have a passion for learning new things and for helping others to learn to the best of their ability,” said Smith. “That being said, I want to help make a difference for future generations.”

A 2008 graduate of Shrine Catholic High School, Smith is the daughter of Tony and Dorothy Smith. She will graduate from Grand Valley State University in 2012 and hopes to pursue a career in elementary education..
