Secretary Rokita overviews Indiana’s history with Vote Centers; shares results from the cost savings study by the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute

(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita delivered a general session address on Indiana’s Vote Centers pilot program at the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections conference in Fort Myers on May 19. Secretary Rokita was invited to share results from Indiana’s pilot program as well as the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute’s study on Vote Centers with nearly 400 Florida election administrators.

“Government should be all about driving efficiencies while doing things on a smaller scale,” said Secretary Rokita. “As local and state leaders nationwide continue to turn over every stone in government in search of ways to streamline operations and tighten budgets, Vote Centers should be front-and-center among the sensible reforms considered.”

Secretary Rokita shared the results of Indiana’s pilot program for Vote Centers, which includes Cass, Tippecanoe and Wayne counties. Cass County experienced a 51.5 percent cost savings and Tippecanoe County experienced a 24.5 percent savings in their 2008 General Election through the use of Vote Centers. In the 2007 Richmond Municipal Election, Wayne County election officials reduced the number of polling places from 30 traditional precinct polls to four Vote Centers.

Secretary Rokita also shared the results of the Vote Centers study released by the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute (IFPI) earlier this year. According to the IFPI study, Vote Centers will produce significant savings for all counties that implement them. Secretary Rokita encouraged the nearly 400 Florida election administrators to replicate the IFPI study for their own use. Secretary Rokita’s office will provide any methodology and data needed to perform additional studies. The IFPI study is available online at
