Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita announces 2009 Indiana Election Administrators Conference; topics include redistricting and online voter registration

(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita announced that the 2009 Indiana Election Administrators Conference will be held this week at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Indianapolis (a detailed agenda is attached). In his role as Indiana’s chief elections officer, Secretary Rokita and the Indiana Election Division organized the conference to bring together election administrators from across the state to discuss best practices in election administration and preparation for the 2010 elections.

“We have worked hard in Indiana to move our elections out of the 20th Century with reforms such as Vote Centers, the Statewide Voter Registration System and passage of the photo ID law,” said Secretary Rokita. “In order for Hoosiers to vote how we live in the 21st Century, we need to continue working alongside the state’s election administrators to prepare for the next wave of innovations such as online poll worker training and certification and online voter registration.”

The conference, which starts tomorrow, Tuesday, December 1st, and continues Wednesday, will also include information for election administrators on military and overseas voters, poll worker training and certification, polling place accessibility grants, and the Voting System Technical Oversight Program, all in preparation for 2010 elections.

Tuesday’s session will feature addresses by national election experts such as Scott Wiedmann, Deputy Director of the Federal Voting Assistance Program for the United States Department of Defense and Keith Cunningham, an expert on poll worker training and certification from Allen County Ohio.  Dr. Ray Scheele from Ball State University will speak about Indiana’s Voting System Technical Oversight Program (VSTOP).

Secretary Rokita will open Wednesday’s session of the conference and speak about the success of the Vote Centers pilot program in three Indiana counties and the latest on Indiana’s efforts to develop an online poll worker training and certification program.  Also on Wednesday, participants will hear the latest on Indiana’s new online voter registration system, which was established by the General Assembly earlier this year. It will allow Hoosiers who already have a current photo ID issued by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to register to vote online. Online voter registration is projected to be available by the summer of 2010.
