Opportunity offers current Case Western Reserve University student chance to experience state government
(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Eric Bixler of Indianapolis is currently completing the prestigious 2009 Indiana Secretary of State Internship Program. The summer-long program selects college and university students from around the state and allows them the opportunity to experience state government first-hand through the Secretary of State’s office.
“Eric exemplifies the kind of top-notch students we have here in Indiana,” Secretary Rokita said. “I feel that he is an individual who will help guide our state and country with his desperately-needed leadership in the coming years, and I’m thrilled to have him here, as he is a valuable addition to our office.”
As a member of the Internship Program, Bixler is currently seeking his law degree at Case Western Reserve University. He received a degree in communication through his undergraduate studies at Goshen College, where he was a four-year varsity soccer player, editor of Goshen’s student-run newspaper and completed internships in journalism and public relations.
Bixler cites several experiences he has had this summer as memorable, including witnessing the state legislature pass the state budget, observing three Indiana Supreme Court oral arguments and meeting personally with elected officials.
As part of his internship, Bixler is spending his time honing his legal writing skills. He has drafted numerous complaints, consent agreements and default judgments for the Secretary of State’s Securities Division.
“Law schools focus on legal theory. Practical experience must come from summer internships, externships and clerkships,” Bixler said. “My internship with the Securities Division is undeniably valuable because I'm researching and writing about real issues affecting real people. The internship also provides valuable networking and insight into how state government operates.”
A 2003 graduate of Bethany Christian High School, Bixler is the son of Sam and Carol Bixler. He will graduate from Case Western Reserve School of Law in 2011 with plans to practice law several years before returning to higher education to receive his Master of Business Administration degree.
