Opportunity offers current Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis student chance to experience state government

(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Donald Kelly of Knox is currently completing the prestigious 2009 Indiana Secretary of State Fellowship Program. The summer-long program selects college and university students from around the state and allows them the opportunity to experience state government first-hand by rotating through the Secretary of State’s divisions.

“Don exemplifies the kind of top-notch students we have here in Indiana,” Secretary Rokita said. “I feel that he is an individual who will help guide our state and country with his desperately-needed leadership in the coming years, and I’m thrilled to have him here, as he is a valuable addition to our office.”

Kelly will be a junior at IUPUI this fall, where he is pursuing a degree in political science with a minor in economics. He is a former IUPUI College Republican press secretary and currently holds a position as senator in Undergraduate Student Government.

Kelly cites some of his most memorable experiences as including the opportunities to meet with several elected officials over the course of the summer.

“Meeting these elected officials is an eye-opening experience that most people do not get to experience, and one that I will not forget.”

The summer fellowship has allowed Kelly to become familiar with state government, all while encouraging him to use his small-town perspective, which he feels helps him relate to the office’s constituents more effectively.

“This experience has been one of the most memorable summers I have had thus far. Being able to work in an elected official’s office is a privilege that I am honored to have,” said Kelly. “I hope to use my experience here and build off of it in order to continue to serve the public in a trustworthy way.”

A 2007 graduate of Knox Community High School, Kelly is the son of Don and Linda Kelly. He will graduate from IUPUI in 2011 with plans to attend law school with a concentration in constitutional law. He would like to eventually take part in political work or run for office.
