Indianapolis, IN - Secretary of State Todd Rokita has selected Kokomo, Indiana as the first community to host a "Protect Your Pockets" workshop on March 18, 2006. This free workshop will be held at the Johanning Civic Center from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include an agenda that focuses on avoiding fraud, investing basics, retirement planning and creating a personal budget.

The "Protect Your Pockets" workshops are an important component of the Indiana Investment Watch program recently developed by the Secretary of State's office, which regulates investments and investment brokers in the state and can inform Hoosiers whether or not an investment opportunity is legitimate. These workshops promote basic financial awareness and arm Hoosiers with the tools needed to prevent fraud. Funding will come from the state's security enforcement fund, which contains money collected from court settlements in security fraud cases.

"Nearly two-thirds of Indiana adults have little or no knowledge about investing and fraudulent schemes," Rokita said. "The first step in protecting yourself is to know the potential risks of investing. If we can achieve that, we may be able to prevent con artists from stealing Hoosiers hard-earned money."

Secretary of State Rokita and other financial experts will speak at the workshop and teach community members practical common sense ways to avoid scams and choose products and services that meet their financial goals.
