(Vevay, IN)--Like a postman, Secretary of State Todd Rokita travels throughout the state in rain, sleet, snow and hail, and in the five years that he has held office, the weather has never stopped him from reaching his destination in any one of Indiana's 92 counties in each of those years.

In the midst of serving his term as President of the National Association of Secretaries of State, Rokita completed the last three county visits of 2007 on Dec. 15 by speaking to a grassroots political club in Dearborn County, delivering Christmas gifts to a family his office adopted in Ohio County, and ringing the Salvation Army holiday bell in Switzerland County.

"I feel I can be a better statewide elected office holder if I spend as much time as possible outside of the Statehouse in Indianapolis, instead visiting our courthouses, fairgrounds and meeting places, making sure Hoosiers have direct and unfettered access to their Secretary of State,” Rokita said.

One of Rokita's most memorable visits of the year was also the most recent. Rokita delivered gifts collected by his office to an adopted family in Rising Sun.

"It was a heartwarming occasion," Rokita said. "This particular family had lost a child a few weeks ago due to a sudden illness so I hope we were able to brighten an otherwise sad time in their lives. My staff represents some of the best hearts and minds in state government.”

Rokita decided soon after he was elected in 2003 that he was not going to confine himself to working strictly in his Statehouse office.

"Being a resident of Munster, up in the northern part of the state, we didn't have much contact with statewide elected officials so I promised myself that if I ever held a constitutional office, I would reach out across the state and be available to the voters who put their trust in me," Rokita said.

While Rokita's rigorous county visit schedule has concluded and plans for 2008 are already underway, successes back at the office this year will have long lasting effects. For example, since May, over 9,000 entities have been registered through the INbiz web portal. Providing this online service allows entrepreneurs the ability to form their business within a matter of minutes. The Securities Division drafted legislation that was passed, creating a new Uniform Securities Act to take effect July 1, 2008, updating and modernizing the current law which was enacted in 1961. In addition, two Indiana counties used Vote Centers as an alternative to precinct based voting for last November's Municipal Election and received critical acclaim for their successes in election administration and reform.
