Washington D.C., (June 17)- Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is in Washington, D.C. today and tomorrow to serve as a member of the Board of Advisors for the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC). The EAC is an independent commission created by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002 to provide guidance on the federal legislation and offer best practices and resources to election officials throughout the nation.
As Indiana Secretary of State, Rokita serves as Indiana’s Chief Elections Officer. He is also president of the National Association of Secretaries of State.
While in Washington, Rokita is reviewing and advising on the following issues:
- Future federal government approaches to the study of voter fraud and intimidation
- Voting system certification standards including standards and approaches to independent software verification and paperless voter verification
- Certification of non-voting system components such as ballot-on-demand printing systems and electronic poll books
- Public Web pages designed to inform voters such as Indiana's best practice example http://www.indianavoters.com/ where Hoosiers can check their registration status, locate polling places, and look up county-specific contact information

Previous to his appointment on the Advisory Board, Rokita served on the nine-member executive board of the EAC’s Standards Board from 2005 through 2007
