Secretary Rokita recognized by the Calumet Council, Boy Scouts of America

(Munster, IN)  Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita told several Boy Scouts at the Lake County Community Recognition Dinner on Thursday that he is confident they are learning important traits such as responsibility that will someday allow them to help fill the current leadership gap in public service.

Secretary Rokita addressed the scouts as the honored guest at the dinner on Thursday. The annual event is hosted by the Calumet Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a benefit for local scouting programs. According to event organizers, Secretary Rokita was chosen as the 2009 honoree in recognition of the significant contributions he has made to his profession, community and the State of Indiana.

"I'm pleased to be honored by an important community-focused organization such as the Boy Scouts," said Secretary Rokita. "But the honor should go to the scouts themselves for their dedication to public service and to the Calumet Council for their leadership in establishing this worthwhile event."

Secretary Rokita also told the scouts that their generation will inherit problems such as monumental budget deficits because of a lack of courage in federal government, but said their experience in scouting will prepare them well to be leaders and to make the hard decisions necessary to help lead the nation out of tough times.
