INDIANAPOLIS-Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement in response to recent reports concerning the Indiana Economic Development Corporation:
"Allegations of soliciting bribes and personal benefit in the name of the state of Indiana are serious. Based upon the information contained within an investigative report by the Indianapolis Star, it is clear that further investigation is warranted. It is hard to read the article and not feel there are grounds to suspect the Indiana Economic Development Corporation did not perform due diligence either in hiring this individual or regarding her subsequent actions on behalf of the state.
"Further, the governor needs to re-open the investigation into these allegations and refer this matter to an appropriate outside agency. It would appear the original investigation was far from thorough and raises an appearance of impropriety that must be dispelled for the sake of the good name of the state of Indiana and the credibility of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. It is also my hope that the next governor will fulfill the need to increase the transparency of contracts in which this taxpayer-funded agency engages.
"It is unfortunate that the integrity of the operation of this important state agency is now being called into question in the 11th hour of Governor Daniels' administration. Given the crucial functions of this agency, and the seriousness of these allegations, the governor has no choice but to call for a thorough, unbiased, independent investigation, if for no other reason than to clear the name of the state, his own and others in this matter.
Any suspicion that the main agency charged with creating jobs for our state cannot be trusted to deal with others with the highest of integrity is a blow to our state's economic development efforts that cannot stand."
