STATEHOUSE (Feb. 9, 2010) - Senate lawmakers today passed Senate Joint Resolution 30 honoring the more than 1,700 Hoosier men and women serving in the United States Armed Services, said State Sen. Greg Walker.
Walker (R-Columbus), author of the resolution, said by passing SJR 30 the Indiana General Assembly shows its support and offers its prayers to the active military members serving in the global war on terrorism and those who may be called to serve in future conflicts. Additionally, the Indiana legislature honored those families who have lost loved ones in the global war on terrorism.
During an afternoon presentation in the Indiana Senate Chamber, a bugler solemnly played the 24 notes of the musical piece "Taps" followed by a brief moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen heroes.
"Today, we remember those Hoosier heroes who courageously gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting to protect the rights and freedoms we enjoy," Walker said. "Their selfless actions should never be forgotten. We must continue to honor these soldiers - past and present - who answered the call to defend the hopes, dreams and values of all Hoosiers and Americans."
Walker said since 1991 more than 150 Indiana service men and women have died while serving in the military.
Joined by Maj. Gen. Martin Umbarger, adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard, Walker recognized the family members of three fallen Indiana soldiers during Tuesday's presentation:
- Mark and Chasity Goodman, parents of Senior Airman Ashton Goodman;
- Gregg and Jannett Keesling, parents of Army Specialist Chancellor Keesling; and
- Linda Andersen, wife of Army Reserve Specialist Paul Andersen.
