Today, the Family and Social Services Administration's (FSSA) Division of Aging announced almost $1.3 million in additional funding from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). The Division of Aging will use the funds to continue serving elderly Hoosiers already involved in the program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), while also assisting seniors who meet the income requirements set forth by the DOL who are not currently participating.

"Additional funding for this program will allow us to serve more unemployed, low-income seniors," said Aging Director Faith Laird. "We are grateful to be able to provide this much needed assistance, especially during such difficult economic times."

Of the $225 million provided in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010 for distribution by the U.S. DOL, Indiana will receive $1,294,933 to immediately address unmet needs for employment and job training among older, low-income Hoosier workers. Successful applicants were chosen based on demonstrated need among the older worker populations they serve; the capacity to immediately and effectively expend the additional funds; and past performance in serving older workers.

SCSEP is a federally funded community service and work-based training program for older American workers. It provides part-time, community service-based job training for unemployed, low-income persons age 55 or older. Through this program, older workers have access to the SCSEP services, as well as other employment assistance available through the workforce investment system.
