Tallian bill to protect EMS employment rights approved by Senate

INDIANAPOLIS- The Senate approved Senate Bill (SB) 87 authored by State Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Portage) today with a vote of 49 to 1. The proposal would entitle EMS personnel to a hearing and an appeals process if a medical director refuses or fails to supervise that individual or suspends the individual without just cause.

"This would ensure that these emergency response professionals get due process and a fair determination when employment or disciplinary issues arise," said Tallian.

SB 87 would also require the commission hearing the appeal to consult with an independent medical expert. Tallian said this would bring an outside perspective into the process to ensure a fair determination.

The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
