State Sen. Sue Landske encourages Hoosiers to help with upcoming census

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 20, 2010) - As Indiana gears up for the 2010 Census, State Sen. Sue Landske (R-Cedar Lake) announced today that Hoosiers can apply for full-time or part-time positions with the U.S. Census Bureau.

Hoosiers who apply for the bureau can work in their own areas. Landske said the data they report will help determine how federal funds are distributed in the community on areas such as schooling, housing, construction and public safety.

"This is a good opportunity for Hoosiers who are looking for work," Landske said. "They will also play a vital role in the future of their communities."

According to bureau officials, citizens can now apply for the following positions: census takers, crew leaders, crew leader assistants and census clerks.

Workers will receive benefits such as flexible hours as either part-time or full-time employees, paid training and mileage reimbursement. To qualify, applicants must pass a written test and be at least 18 years old with a valid Social Security number.

"During the early phases of the census, workers will conduct interviews with residents to verify addresses and update address lists from 2009," Landske said. "They will help ensure that Indiana has an accurate census in 2010."
