STATEHOUSE (Jan. 11, 2010) - A record 35,000 holiday greeting cards were delivered to Indiana military personnel this past holiday season thanks to the overwhelming response to the "Hoosier Cheer for Our Heroes" mail campaign, State Sen. Sue Landske (R-Cedar Lake) said.
"In the four years since Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman began this program, nearly 92,000 holiday cards have been donated by Hoosiers and delivered to our troops," Landske said. "This past holiday, Hoosiers supplied more cards than ever and topped last year's figure by about 15,000. I hope the cards lifted the spirits of all the brave men and women serving our country."
Landske joined other state lawmakers this year in encouraging cards be donated, so they could be delivered to members of the Naval Reserves and Indiana National Guard units serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and other locations around the globe.
Students, church groups, Boy Scout and 4-H members, social organizations, families and individuals all contributed to the success of the program, Landske said.
"I am very proud that the people of Indiana are so giving and grateful for the thousands of Hoosiers keeping our country safe," Landske said. "I offer my sincere 'thanks' to those who participated in this program as well as to those protecting our freedoms."
Sen. Landske represents Senate District 6, which includes Benton, Lake, Newton and Porter counties.
