Clark County's Nu-Yale Cleaners receives IDEM grant

Jeffersonville business is world-wide leader

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- Horlander Enterprise, doing business as Nu-Yale Cleaners, has received a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to install new environmentally-friendly dry cleaning technology.

Instead of using a federally-regulated substance, perchlorethylene, to dry clean clothes, Jeffersonville-based Nu-Yale has installed state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly equipment.

"We have purchased a Solvair Glacier Dry Cleaning system, the ninth in the world to be installed," explained Gary Maloney, Nu-Yale Cleaners president.  "Along with being on the forefront of changing the industry, this machine also provides better quality and uses no heat to dry the clothes. The clothes are cleaner, brighter, whiter, gentler and green. Nu-Yale feels that this has put us 10 years ahead of the industry. It is great when Indiana can lead the nation in a positive way."

Maloney also expressed appreciation for IDEM's proactive pollution prevention efforts. "We appreciate the forward thinking of the State of Indiana and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. This grant has allowed Nu-Yale Cleaners to set the standard for dry cleaning in America," he said.

IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly congratulated the company on receiving the grant. "When voluntary business actions result in improved operational practices, there will be a winning outcome every time," said Commissioner Easterly. "Gary Malone and Nu-Yale Cleaners are to be commended for their innovation and their achievements for engaging in environmentally-friendly business operations."

The Pollution Prevention (P2) grant program is administered by IDEM's Office of Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance. The P2 program is designed to help Hoosiers prevent pollution, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste with measurable results. Pollution Prevention grants are available to businesses, local governments and schools. Grants require a 50 percent match, and reduced match amounts are available for minority/women business enterprises, small businesses, members of Indiana's Environmental Stewardship Program and the Indiana CLEAN Community Challenge program.

The pre-application deadline for the next round of Pollution Prevention grants is January 16, 2009. Pre-applications and more information are available by calling (800) 988-7901 or by visiting Additional information about Nu-Yale and its new process can be found by visiting and
