On July 1, 2014, the salesperson license will no longer be issued to initial applicants for real estate licensure. Before this date, currently licensed salespersons will need to complete a twenty-four (24) hour course in order to upgrade their license to a broker license. This course will serve as the required continuing education for these salesperson licensees for the period beginning on July 1, 2012 and ending June 30, 2014. Salespersons who complete the course will also need to apply for a broker license, and submit proof of completing the course along with the appropriate fees and forms.

Renewal

Salespersons who wish to continue holding a license in "Inactive" or “Referral” status will need to renew their license by June 30, 2014. Notifications will be sent to licensees on or about April 1, 2014.

Continuing Education

For the renewal period beginning July 1, 2012 and ending on June 30, 2014, the continuing education required for renewal of the salesperson license will be met by completion of the twenty-four (24) hour broker transition course. After June 30, 2014, real estate licensees will have to complete twelve (12) hours of approved continuing education each year, for a total of thirty-six (36) hours over the renewal period.

Broker Transition Course

The broker transition course is a twenty-four (24) hour course, and must be approved by the Commission to be considered along with an application for upgrade. The course is now available through the providers that were approved by the Commission. Please be aware that the licensing examination required for the transition will be provided by the course provider at the conclusion of the course. No examination is provided by the Commission, IPLA, or any outside vendor. For more information on the exam, please contact your course provider.

Referral

Salespersons who have their license in "Inactive" or “Referral” status will be transitioned to a broker license on July 1, 2014 provided they have applied for renewal of the license. These salespersons are not required to complete continuing education, but must renew their license as usual.

Any salespersons who receive a broker license while in referral status (on July 1, 2014) will have to complete the twenty-four (24) hour broker transition course, and submit the appropriate fees and forms, in order to transfer the license back into an “Active” status.
