WATER QUANTITY PERSPECTIVE

Water quantity issues may arise either where there are volumes of water which are inadequate or excessive, and these volumes are usually considered in terms of human needs. With the availability of Lake Michigan as a water resource, water quantity deficiencies were not a high-profile discussion item with the Northwest Indiana work groups.

One area of concern may suggest the need for action. The three shoreline counties maintain emergency management and disaster plans. These plans do not specifically address severe storm disasters associated with the Lake Michigan shoreline. Shoreline damage resulting from March 1998 storms seems to underline this need.

A plan might be developed among the counties, and in cooperation with the State Emergency Management Agency, to address this contingency. The plan might also factor concerns which have been addressed for evacuation of the growing number of recreational watercraft which frequent the Indiana waters of Lake Michigan.
