Indiana State Library

Library > Volunteer Volunteer

The Indiana State Library welcomes those who are interested in sharing their time and talents through volunteering. Volunteering at the Indiana State Library provides a friendly environment in which volunteers work alongside staff to provide enhanced access to the library collections, services, and programs.

Volunteers have the satisfaction of helping to complete projects that could not be done without them. Many of the projects involve working with unique historical materials and unusual collections which are held in the Library and provide an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Indiana history and enhance access to Indiana's heritage.

How the Program Works

Volunteers work on specific projects arranged by library divisions. Each project is supervised by an experienced staff member.

Benefits

One of the biggest benefits the Library can offer is on the job experience that may assist the volunteer in obtaining outside paid employment. ISL will provide a letter of recommendation for volunteers that have completed a minimum of 50 hours, and are in good standing. The library is an excellent place for networking with other volunteers, and library professionals. Volunteers will receive a 25% discount on books and other materials in the Indiana Historical Bureau.
