The Monroe County Public Library contributed to this article
The Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) has been awarded a $79,582 grant from Smart investing@your libraryŽ, a partnership between the American Library Association (ALA) and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The goal of the library’s grant project, called “It’s Your Money,” will be to educate local residents ages 15-29 to use unbiased financial education resources to create a budget, make good consumer decisions about major purchases and home ownership, and manage credit, savings and investments. The grant will run from February 2011 through January 2013.
The grant will enable MCPL to add many financial resources to its collection, develop a Financial Literacy Web portal, and create short “It’s Your Money” videos for cable casting and podcasting. Additionally, the project will host 15 public training sessions and 15 “talk to an expert” opportunities at the library and at other community locations.
The Carmel Clay Public Library was also among the 20 public library recipients nationwide to be awarded funds through this initiative during the latest round of grantmaking. Carmel Clay will receive a $84,600 grant to establish the library as the county’s focal point for personal finance learning. The program will address money basics for teens, college financing, retirement planning and investor protection, among other topics.
