IMLS Seeks Candidates for National Medal

onal Medal for Museum and Library ServiceSupporters of outstanding museums and libraries are encouraged to nominate these institutions for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for exemplary museum and library community service. The National Medal honors museums and libraries that make extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Medal winners receive a $10,000 award and are honored at a National Medal award ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

Any individual, including a library employee, may nominate their favorite library. Past winners from Indiana include the Indianapolis Museum of Art ('09) and Frankfort Community Public Library ('06).

For more information and to access the nomination form, please go to: Nominations must be postmarked by February 15, 2011.

Senate Confirms Hildreth as New IMLS Director

Recently, Susan Hildreth's nomination to be director of the IMLS was confirmed by unanimous consent by the United States Senate. Hildreth was previously appointed as California’s state librarian by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Prior to her position as California state librarian, Hildreth was at the San Francisco Public Library, where she served as deputy director and then city librarian. Hildreth also served as president of the Public Library Association in 2006.

Hildreth will serve a four-year term as Director. The directorship of the Institute alternates between individuals from the museum and library communities. She succeeds Marsha L. Semmel, who served as IMLS Acting Director since March 14, following the departure of IMLS Director Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Ph.D., at the conclusion of her four-year term.

Online Services Help Make Sense of Tax Forms

I-FileElectronic filing is on the rise in Indiana. In 2010, over 1.8 million (61% of all taxpayers) Hoosiers have chosen the convenience of filing their tax returns electronically, and as a result many are experiencing more accurate returns and faster refunds.

Online tools like I-File, the state’s own fast and free online filing tool for individual income taxes, and the fed/state program contribute to greater accuracy by ensuring taxpayers’ returns align with new and amended tax laws, and check math calculations as the return is completed. I-File will even select the proper form for the taxpayer.

Patrons looking for answers to questions about filing their state taxes should be directed to Individual Taxpayers FAQs (en espaņol). This resource has detailed and comprehendible answers to dozens of frequently asked questions. If patrons still cannot find an answer, they can email questions to

The IRS has a similar FAQ page for federal tax filers and a special section that highlights tax changes for the current tax year. Additionally, the IRS now offers the Free File program open to taxpayers with a 2010 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less.
