What is World Family Tree?

World Family Tree CD's each contain hundreds or thousands of family trees submitted by individual family researchers. Consequently, the size, degree of detail, level of documentation, and--most importantly--the accuracy of these user-submitted family trees varies widely. These family trees may also allow you to locate other researchers who share your family lines.

How do I use World Family Tree?

Each volume of the World Family Tree on CD-ROM contains its own index of every name on the CD, as well as a list and very brief description of each of the family trees provided on that disc. There is no master index to the entire World Family Tree collection in CD-ROM form; however, Family Tree Maker/Genealogy.com do provide a searchable online index. You can search specific names to identify the specific CD-ROMs and family tree numbers that contain that name. Having this information in advance of your visit to the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library will facilitate your research.

Using this searchable index is FREE, but you must register your name and email address with Family Tree Maker/Genealogy.com in order to use this index. If you have previously registered with either organization, you can simply login. You do NOT need to subscribe to any Family Tree Maker/Genealogy.com service to use this searchable index online. From the search results page, you can record or print the CD-ROM and tree numbers that contain the name you entered.
