A dedicated public servant, State Senator Jim Lewis has spent a lifetime working to improve the lives of Hoosiers.
Elected to the Indiana Senate in 1974, after serving four years in the Indiana House of Representatives, Lewis served as the Senate's Democrat Caucus Chairperson from 1988 until 2007. Lewis serves as the Assistant Democratic Caucus Chair, assisting Democratic Caucus Chair Connie Sipes (D-New Albany) set the agenda for and convene caucus meetings, as well as other official duties.
In addition to his leadership position, Lewis serves as the ranking Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee. He also serves on the Insurance and Financial Institutions; Agriculture and Small Business; Homeland Security, Transportation and Veteran Affairs; and Appointments and Claims standing committees as well as the Transportation and Insurance Subcommittees. He has also been appointed to serve on the Transportation Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories.
Before his election to state office, he held several positions at the local level including serving on the Charlestown City Council and as a Clark County Councilman.
Jim Lewis attended Purdue University before moving on to become a building contractor in his self-owned business, Lewis Construction Company. He is now retired and enjoys spending time with his wife, Anna Mae, his three adult boys, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
