Synopsis: Lighting and equipment on vehicles. Provides that certain
motor vehicles must be equipped with two stop lamps and that certain
motorcycles must be equipped with at least one stop lamp. Provides
that a vehicle operated on a highway must be constructed or equipped
and maintained in conformance with law. Makes conforming
amendments.

A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
motor vehicles.
SECTION 1. IC 9-19-1-4 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS
[EFFECTIVE UPON PASSAGE]: Sec. 4. Except as otherwise provided
in this article, a person may not operate or move upon a highway in
Indiana a vehicle or combination of vehicles that are not:
(1) constructed or equipped; and
(2) maintained;
in compliance with this article.
SECTION 2. IC 9-19-6-6 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS
[EFFECTIVE UPON PASSAGE]: Sec. 6. (a) Except as provided in
subsection (b), a person may not:
(1) sell; or
(2) drive on the highways;
in Indiana a motor vehicle including a motorcycle or motor-driven
cycle manufactured or assembled after December 31, 1955, unless
the vehicle is equipped with at least one (1) stoplight two (2) stop
lamps meeting the requirements of section 17 of this chapter.
(b) A motorcycle manufactured or assembled after December
31, 1955, must be equipped with at least one (1) stop lamp. A
motorcycle manufactured before January 1, 1956, is not required to be
equipped with a stoplight under subsection (a) at least one (1) stop
lamp if the motorcycle is not operated at the times when lighted head
lamps and other illuminating devices are required under IC 9-21-7-2.
(c) This subsection does not apply to a motorcycle or motor-driven
cycle. A person may not:
(1) sell;
(2) offer for sale; or
(3) operate on the highways;
a motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer registered in Indiana and
manufactured or assembled after January 1, 1956, unless the vehicle is
equipped with mechanical or electrical turn signals meeting the
requirements of section 17 of this chapter.
SECTION 3. IC 9-19-6-7 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS
[EFFECTIVE UPON PASSAGE]: Sec. 7. In addition to other
equipment required in this chapter, the following vehicles must be
equipped as follows, under the conditions stated in IC 9-21-7-2(b):
(1) On a bus or truck the following:
(A) On the rear, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at each side.
(B) On the rear, one (1) stoplight. stop lamp.
(2) On a bus or truck that is at least eighty (80) inches in overall
width, in addition to the requirements in subdivision (1), the
following:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at each side.
(B) On the rear, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at each side.
(C) On each side, two (2) side marker lamps, one (1) at or near
the front end and one (1) at or near the rear.
(D) On each side, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at or near the
front and one (1) at or near the rear.
(3) On a truck-tractor, the following:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at each side.
(B) On the rear, one (1) stoplight. stop lamp.
(4) On a trailer or semitrailer having a gross weight greater than
three thousand (3,000) pounds, the following:
(A) On the front, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at each side.
(B) On each side, two (2) side marker lamps, one (1) at or near
the front and one (1) at or near the rear.
(C) On each side, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at or near the front
and one (1) at or near the rear.
(D) On the rear, two (2) clearance lamps, one (1) at each side.
(E) On the rear, two (2) reflectors, one (1) at each side.
