A RESOLUTION honoring Lieutenant Robert Thomas
Edlin.
Whereas, Robert Thomas Edlin was born in New Albany,
Indiana, in 1922;
Whereas, Robert Thomas Edlin enlisted in the Indiana
National Guard and later served with the Army Rangers;
Whereas, On June 6, 1944, Robert Thomas Edlin was the
first soldier from A company, U. S. Army Ranger Battalion, to
set foot on a landing craft to depart for Normandy and the
D-Day battle;
Whereas, Robert Thomas Edlin was injured in both legs
while helping secure the beachhead at Omaha Beach and
Pont-du-Hoc;
Whereas, On September 10, 1944, Robert Thomas Edlin
brought about the surrender of 800 German soldiers and the
capture of a German fort on the Le Conquet Peninsula in
France by holding a grenade against the German
commandant's side and demanding his surrender, for which Lt.
Edlin was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his
heroism;
Whereas, In recognition of his actions under fire, Lt.
Robert Thomas Edlin was inducted into the Ranger Hall of
Fame at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1995; and
Whereas, The citizens of the state of Indiana applaud
Robert Thomas Edlin for his bravery and for the sacrifices he
made for his country: Therefore,
