A RESOLUTION honoring Colonel Samuel R. Graves III
on the occasion of his retirement.
Whereas, Colonel Samuel R. Graves III has served his
country honorably in times of war and peace;
Whereas, Colonel Graves graduated from the Armor
Officer Candidate School in 1967. He then attended the
Defense Information School;
Whereas, Colonel Graves also attended and graduated
from the Jungle Warfare School in Panama where he earned
the Jungle Expert Badge;
Whereas, Colonel Graves was sent to Vietnam where he
served as commanding officer of a Mobile Advisor Team north
of Saigon;
Whereas, Upon returning to the United States, Colonel
Graves was Training Officer, Senior Army Advisor's Office at
Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana;
Whereas, After four years of active duty, Colonel Graves
joined the Indiana National Guard where he commanded the
120th PIO Detachment where Dan Quayle was his most famous
subordinate;
Whereas, Colonel Graves' awards and decorations include
the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star,
Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medals,
various Southeast and Southwest Asia service medals and
Kuwaiti Liberation medals, the Superior Unit Medal, and the
Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm device;
Whereas, In civilian life, Colonel Graves is the
Indianapolis bureau chief of MetroNetworks, the host of
"Consider This", a TV program sponsored by Indiana
University dealing with international politics, and a local voice
talent;
Whereas, Colonel Graves is engaged to marry his British
sweetheart and friend of 25 years, Sabra Phillips;
Whereas, Colonel Graves' takes his motto - Never take
yourself too seriously unless you're serious - to heart and
enjoys his life to the fullest; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that a man of Colonel
Graves' accomplishments should be so honored: Therefore,
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Colonel Graves and his sons, Michael and Jon-Erik.
