A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to recognize Union City, Indiana
and Union City, Ohio on the Sesquicentennial celebration of the
founding of these sister cities.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to recognize Union City,
Indiana and Union City, Ohio on the Sesquicentennial celebration of
the founding of these sister cities.
Whereas, Jeremiah Smith
founded Union City, Indiana
in 1849, and Union City, Ohio was founded shortly thereafter
in 1849 by four Ohio residents;
Whereas, through the years, these sister cities effectively
became the hub of both states;
Whereas, the sister cities have enjoyed two separate
municipal governments, school systems, time zones, area
codes and zip codes, yet they share one Post Office and one
Chamber of Commerce;
Whereas, the attraction of the cities as a hub of
commerce brought five railroads to meet there, making it the
railroading capital of the United States;
Whereas, Union City, Indiana is proud to claim native
Isaac P. Gray as the 19th Governor of Indiana, serving from
1885 to 1889;
Whereas, both cities are jointly enjoying their
Sesquicentennial celebration this year, with a week of
festivities from August 1-7, 1999; and,
Whereas, both cities should be recognized for their
lengthy heritage and achievements during the past 150 years,
Therefore:
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes both
Union City, Indiana and Union City, Ohio on their Sesquicentennial
celebration this year.
SECTION 2. That it further honors the sister cities for their
interesting history and their successful unified effort to create a hub
between the great states of Indiana and Ohio.
SECTION 3. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit copies of this Resolution to Union City, Indiana Mayor Perry
Miller, Union City, Ohio Mayor Scott Stahl, C. M. Jefferis, General
Chairman of the Sesquicentennial Celebration, and Darlene Wymer,
Executive Secretary of the Union City Chamber of Commerce.
