Mission

The mission of the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Chronic Respiratory Disease Section is to reduce the burden of asthma in Indiana.

The Chronic Respiratory Disease Section works to implement the State Asthma Plan. The State Asthma Plan guides the development and implementation of interventions that improve the health and quality of life of Hoosiers with asthma. The program also maintains a comprehensive surveillance system for the ongoing, systematic collection of asthma data. In addition to data collection, the system also allows for analysis and interpretation of asthma data, which is essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the program.

 2014 Healthy Lung Expo Indianapolis

The Healthy Lung Expo is a program designed for patients and healthcare providers to learn more about the latest trends, resources and research surrounding COPD, asthma and lung cancer. Speakers from a variety of fields will present current medical based research on topics that have the most impact on those whose lives are touched by these conditions.

This year we introduce the Asthma Education Program, featuring Asthma Education and Management.  Asthma Management and Education, is a 2-hour program that recognizes the critical role allied health professionals play in educating and caring for the patient with asthma and allergies. Nurses earn 2.6 continuing education credits and respiratory therapists earn 2 CRCE credits while learning the latest information on the pathophysiology of asthma and allergy; current treatment methods; effective techniques for patient education; ways to prevent asthma episodes; and hands-on experience with peak flow meters and demonstration of medication delivery devices.

The importance of establishing a patient/clinician partnership for asthma management and patient education is also emphasized.  The program reflects the most current standards from the 2007 National Asthma Education and Prevention Program’s (NAEPP) Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma.

Attendees will be treated to a relaxing day full of inspirational messages, education, exhibits, luncheon and door prizes.
