The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

Under TEFAP, commodity foods are made available by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to States.  States provide the food to local agencies that they have selected, usually food banks, which in turn, distribute the food to soup kitchens and food pantries that directly serve the public. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) buys the food, including processing and packaging, and ships it to the States.  The amount received by each State depends on its low-income and unemployed population.  State agencies work out details of administration and distribution.  They select local organizations that either directly distribute to households or serve meals, or distribute to other local organizations that perform these functions. The National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3 HUNGRY and 1-877-8 HAMBRE (1-866-348-6479 and 1-877-842-6273) refers people in need of emergency food assistance to food pantries, government programs, and model grassroots organizations that work to improve access to healthy, nutritious food, and build self-reliance. Help is available on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. EST.   Hablamos español.

Food Recalls

The best way for anyone to get email notifications of all food recalls is by signing up for free email updates from http://www.recalls.gov/.  This is a one-stop shop for U.S. Government recalls.   We encourage everyone who needs recall information to sign up today!  It’s easy.  Follow these few steps and you will receive an instant acknowledgement of your subscription from the Dept. of Health and Human Services:

  1. Log on to http://www.recalls.gov/.
  2. Click on the Food tab at the top.
  3. Click on “Sign Up for Free Recall Updates by E-Mail”  (in red toward top of page)
  4. This takes you to the Dept. of Health and Human Services signup page, where you will:
        
    1. Enter your email address and confirm same.
    2. Check the box titled FoodSafety.gov Recalls and Alerts under the FoodSafety.gov Updates section.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

CSFP  is a Federally funded program, which works to improve the health of low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, other new mothers up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to age six, and elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. It provides food and administrative funds to States to supplement the diets of these groups.  For more information, visit the USDA Web site at http://www.fns.usda.gov/fdd/programs/csfp/.
