Laboratories > Chemistry Laboratories > Blood Lead Blood Lead

Blood Lead testing is performed on children’s whole blood specimens for the Indiana Lead and Healthy Homes Program (ILHHP) in the Division of Maternal and Child Health (MCH).  Initial screening is performed on finger stick blood specimens and elevated blood lead levels are verified using venous blood.

Instructions for properly collecting blood lead specimens, labeling specimen tubes and requisitions, and delivering blood specimens to the ISDH laboratory are provided to specimen submitters by ILHHP field personnel.  Blood lead specimens will be considered unsatisfactory if the quantity is not sufficient to perform testing (QNS) or the blood is clotted (CLOT).   Specimen testing may be delayed if the requisition that accompanies the specimen contains insufficient or incorrect information.

Blood Lead analysis requests must be made through the Indiana Lead and Healthy Homes Program (ILHHP)
