SNACK FOOD RECALL EXPANDS

INDIANAPOLIS – Robert’s American Gourmet Food, Inc. of Sea Cliff, New York is expanding its snack recall to include Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks Snack Food, all lots and sizes, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

On June 28, 2007, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in conjunction with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced a Salmonella Wandsworth outbreak in 17 states in connection with Veggie Booty snack food. Indiana reported one confirmed case in the Salmonella Wandsworth outbreak.

Salmonella Wandsworth is a rare strain that causes gastro-intestinal illness. It has not previously been associated with an outbreak of human illness in the United States. Since March 1, 2007, there have been 54 cases identified.

“Although Indiana has only one confirmed case involved in this outbreak, the product was distributed throughout the state, and there is potential for more cases to be identified,” said Lynae Granzow, enteric epidemiologist, Indiana State Department of Health. “At this point, the outbreak is not yet over. We may continue to see new cases nationally for the next few weeks as the recalled snack food is removed from shelves and while cases are awaiting laboratory confirmation.”

Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks were distributed nationwide and Canada, and sold through local distributors, internet sales, phone orders, mail orders and retail outlets. Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks are packed in a flexible, plastic foil bag in a 6 oz. size, and has UPC 15665-10356. The brand name is Robert’s American Gourmet and all codes and expiration dates of Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks are being recalled.

Robert’s American Gourmet has decided to add Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks to the recall of Veggie Booty as a precautionary measure. The company has ceased production and distribution of both products pending results of the investigation by the FDA and Robert’s American Gourmet.

The FDA continues to warn people not to eat Veggie Booty snack food, made by Robert's American Gourmet, due to possible contamination with Salmonella Wandsworth. Consumers should throw out Veggie Booty and Super Veggie Tings Crunch Corn Sticks.

Almost all the illnesses have occurred in children younger than 10, and a majority of cases are toddlers. Most of the people affected reported bloody diarrhea, with four people requiring hospitalization. The FDA learned of the illnesses on June 27 from the CDC.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea, and gas. Symptoms usually last four to seven days, and appear 18 to 36 hours after exposure. People with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems are at risk for life-threatening infections. Most cases of Salmonella infection are short lived, and do not require medical care or antibiotics.

Health officials recommend the following steps to prevent Salmonella infection:

  • Wash hands with soap and water after using the restroom; after assisting someone with diarrhea and/or vomiting; after contact with animals and reptiles; after swimming; before, during, and after food preparation; after exposure to raw meat products.

  • Use separate equipment and utensils for handling raw foods.

  • Separate raw meat, poultry, and seafood from other foods in your refrigerator.

  • Wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.

  • Cook raw meats to proper temperatures.

  • Refrigerate food promptly before after preparation.
