HOUSE OF THALLER, INC. EXPANDS RECALL OF SMOKED SALMON DIP BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK

House of Thaller, Inc. of Knoxville, TN is voluntarily recalling an additional 11,177 pounds of dips containing Smoked Salmon because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The Listeria contamination was traced to hot smoked Salmon supplied to House of Thaller and used as an ingredient in these dips. The products were distributed to AL, AR, CO, GA, IL, KS, KY, MI, MO, MS, NC, NE, OH, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WV and WY. The products reached consumers packed under the Kroger brand and were sold in Kroger Stores, Dillon Stores and King Soopers.

The expanded recall is the result of a comprehensive investigation of the food handling equipment, ingredients and laboratory testing at the production facility. This testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the Smoked Salmon supplied to House of Thaller by an outside vendor.

The production of the Smoked Salmon recipes has been suspended.

No illnesses have been confirmed to date in connection with this problem.
