Case Management Services
Local Health Officers are responsible for ensuring the provision of case management to all children under seven (7) years of age in their jurisdiction (410 IAC 29-2). A staff person authorized by the local health department to perform case management responsibilities will contact you about services for your lead poisoned child. The case manager will
- Work with your child’s primary medical provider on follow-up treatment.
- Assist in arranging a retesting schedule for your child.
- Arrange for testing other children in your home who are under 7 years old.
- Conduct an initial home visit to assess further needs your child(ren) may have.
- Help you arrange an environmental assessment to find out the cause of your child’s lead poisoning
- Recommend other actions that the local health officer believes will assist you in preventing the child’s blood lead level from increasing.
The Local Health Officer may enter upon and inspect private property, at proper times after due notice, in regard to the possible presence, source, and cause of lead poisoning and lead hazards. The Local Health Officer may order what is reasonable and necessary to prevent lead poisoning or remediate lead hazards (410 IAC 29-4).
- The local health department will help you arrange for a qualified, licensed lead risk assessor to test your home to find the cause of your child's lead poisoning.
- The risk assessor will issue a written report to the owner of your home (and to you if you are a renter) detailing the lead hazards and giving the options for fixing them.
- The local health department will help explain the options for fixing the lead hazards.
- Lead hazards can either be temporarily controlled or fully abated (eliminated).
- In some areas, grants are available to assist owners in fixing lead hazards.
