International travel is an exciting experience, but some destinations may pose certain health risks. There are steps you can take before you leave for your international destination that can help you prevent illness and enjoy your travel abroad.The most important step you can take to prevent illness while traveling abroad is to visit an International Travel Clinic four to six weeks before your departure. A health care provider at an International Travel Clinic will evaluate your health risks based on where you will be traveling, the time of year you will be traveling, your planned activities, and your medical history. The provider can then make appropriate recommendations and provide appropriate health care (such as immunizations or antimalarial drugs) as necessary.
To find an International Travel Clinic near you, visit http://www.in.gov/isdh/17199.htm. Most International Travel Clinics operate by appointment, so be sure to schedule an appointment before your visit. Before your appointment, gather the following information and take it with you:
- Your itinerary, including dates of travel, location of travel, and planned activities.
- Your immunizations record.
- Information about your medical history, including any medications you currently take.
- Any questions you may have regarding health concerns while traveling.
