Integrated Public Safety Commission

Best Practices, Mutual Aid, SOPs > Statewide SOP Workshop Statewide SOP Workshop

Clear and effective Standard Operating Procedures are a critical part of effective communications during emergency response.

SOPs are formal written guidelines or instructions for incident response. SOPs typically have both operational and technical components to enable emergency responders to act in a coordinated fashion across disciplines in emergencies.

With the Federal government's focus on NIMS compliance throughout States, the development and practice of SOPs has become a priority for Indiana interoperable communications efforts.

While some Indiana agencies have developed SOPs, the existence, or even awareness of such plans varies widely across the state.  In the coming weeks and months, the Integrated Public Safety Commission will be focused upon putting together the pieces of this puzzle, so that first responders across jurisdictions and disciplines will be ready to act if and when necessary.

On May 6, 2009 the Integrated Public Safety Commission hosted a one-day workshop, facilitated by the federal Interoperable Communications Technical Advisory Program (ICTAP) to begin the important process of formalizing local, regional and state SOPs.
