This project involves construction of a new interchange at Interstate 69 and Union Chapel Road. The purpose of the project is to provide additional access to and from I-69 in northern Allen County. Construction of this new interchange at Union Chapel Road will reduce congestion at the State Road 1/Dupont Road interchange and will provide better local and regional movement throughout northern Fort Wayne and outlying communities.
The Union Chapel Road interchange design consists of on- and off-ramps in each direction of northbound and southbound I-69, and two roundabouts, one at each end of the ramp termini on the west side and east side of the Union Chapel Road bridge.
During the 2012 construction season, Union Chapel Road was closed to traffic over I-69. Work crews constructed the bridge, the western roundabout and the northwest, southwest, and southeast ramps to the interchange during this time. The road reopened to traffic in December 2012, along with the three constructed interchange ramps – consisting of the northbound I-69 off-ramp, the southbound I-69 off-ramp and the southbound I-69 on-ramp.
During the 2013 construction season, the eastern roundabout and northeast ramp (the northbound I-69 on-ramp) will be completed.
The project cost is approximately $13 million. The project was awarded to Brooks Construction.
In conjunction with this project, also during the 2013 construction season, Allen County will be building roundabouts east of the interchange at Union Chapel Road and Diebold Road and west of the interchange at Union Chapel Road and Auburn Road.
