Regional Screening Levels

IDEM bases its screening levels on U.S. EPA’s Regional Screening Levels (RSL) Table, which U.S. EPA updates twice yearly. The RSL User’s Guide describes the equations that U.S. EPA uses to derive its screening levels.

Human Health Risk Assessment

U.S. EPA published Volume 1A (Human Health Evaluation Manual) of its Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund (RAGS) in 1989, and occasionally produces new volumes. Part B discusses derivation of preliminary remediation goals, Part E covers dermal risk assessment, and Part F concerns inhalation risk assessment. The Supplement describes standard default exposure assumptions. The Exposure Factors Handbook (2012) is a compendium of physiological and behavioral data useful in assessing risk.

Ecological Risk Assessment

The U.S. EPA Region V Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) program published a set of ecological screening levels in 2003. IDEM often refers to these levels when assessing potential ecological impacts from releases.

Statistics

ProUCL is a free statistical software application that IDEM recommends for use in calculating upper confidence limits (UCLs). The Data Quality Assessment: Statistical Methods for Practitioners document is a compendium of statistical procedures used in environmental applications.
