Source Water Featured Communities: Corydon
The Town of Corydon submitted their Hoosier Water Guardian application prior to their Phase II submittal in order to improve their final plan. This kind of action is strongly recommended since Wellhead Protection is an ongoing process requiring regular updates and continuous improvements. In reviewing their information it showed that they had 10 members on their Local Planning Team that had recently been activated after a period of inactivity. They had delineated a 10 year time of travel protection area which goes beyond the 5 year time of travel required in the State Rules. They had also installed at least 6 monitoring wells. They recently updated their contingency plan and have kept it updated. The water superintendent reviews their inventory of potential sources annually. Annual collection days for household hazardous wastes are promoted by the County. The town maintains complete ownership of land surrounding their sanitary set-back areas keeping it mowed and fenced. In addition, they installed a new backup generator and inter-connections with 2 other water supplies to be better prepared for emergency situations. Based upon IDEM’s review, they added several items to their Educational Outreach program in their Phase II Plan including special hazardous material training for their local planning team, using a groundwater model at community events, and tours for local school children. All this fully qualifies them for the award of “Hoosier Water Guardian” as a community who has demonstrated excellent collaboration and commitment in developing and implementing their community's wellhead protection plan.” Keep up the good work Corydon!
