The City of Ligonier has been exemplary in implementing wellhead protection measures since their first submittal of their delineation in 2001. They delineated a 10 year time of travel protection area which goes beyond the 5 year time of travel required in the State Rules. They have installed 2 sentinel monitoring wells. Ownership of land covering their sanitary set-back area along with a recently completed vulnerability assessment insures security for their wellheads. They have recently updated their Contingency plan and keep it updated. The water superintendent reviews their inventory of potential sources annually. They posted signs along roads indicating the boundaries of their protection zone. The staff have been active in education activities, constructing their own wellfield model for use in schools and other public educational events. Water Awareness Week is recognized annually and plant tours are given regularly. Annual Tox-Away days are promoted. In addition, they have joined 38 other communities in the INWarn program to provide assistance during times of emergency and applied for a groundwater guardian award. It is IDEM’s honor to present them with the award of “Hoosier Water Guardian with Distinction” for communities dedicated to wellhead protection.
