Chapter 2 - Section I: Overview

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) encourages participation in the rulemaking and permitting processes. State and federal regulations set how IDEM interacts with the public and conducts business. IDEM may issue notice to the public when citizen participation is required or sought concerning a number of agency actions. Examples include projects requiring an environmental permit, rules being considered by Indiana’s environmental boards, and environmental studies or reports available for public comment. One of the most important parts of participating is knowing about all the ways to get involved. Whether it’s understanding a public notice, knowing how to submit public comment, or filing a formal appeal, being prepared is vital to successful interaction with IDEM.

In addition to the information contained in this chapter, IDEM’s Web site offers tutorials about the services available and how to submit comments. In addition to the Web site, educational brochures, posters and pamphlets are available online or by calling IDEM’s Office of Media & Communications Services at (800) 451-6027. The public is encouraged to share information with friends and neighbors and help IDEM provide effective public service.
