Chapter 1 - Section VI: Online Services and Resources

IDEM takes advantage of technology to provide accurate and efficient service to Hoosiers. By utilizing the internet, IDEM has been able to provide more current information more quickly and with less cost to Indiana taxpayers. A sampling of online services follows:

  • Acronyms List - IDEM's comprehensive listing of environmentally-related acronyms
  • Enforcement Database - Every month, IDEM’s Office of Enforcement publishes a list of enforcement actions and orders that were finalized during the previous month.
  • Online Air Permit Search - Allows users to check the status of a permit filing with IDEM’s Office of Air Quality.
  • Publication Catalog - Provides quick access to publications produced and distributed by the agency.
  • Real-Time Monitoring - Provides a link to IDEM’s air monitoring network site. As of December 2008, IDEM is in the process of linking all our air monitoring sites into one easy-to–use site. Approximately 65 percent of Indiana’s air monitoring network has now been linked into this system. To view data from monitors not yet on the system, visit IDEM's Web site. Additional air quality monitoring reports are available.
  • Community Right to Know - This online reporting tool allows businesses to update facility information and provide real-time information to responders who need it, in the case of a chemical or hazardous substance release.
  • Regulatory Services Portal - The tool is designed to make it easier for customers to electronically submit notifications, applications and data directly to the agency’s database system, eliminating potential data entry errors while increasing efficiency. IDEM’s 401 Water Quality Certification Regional General Permit Notification is the first service available. Additional services and applications will continue to be added.
  • Safe Drinking Water Information Search - This database allows users to find out pertinent information about specific drinking water systems, such as how many people are served, if there are wells, sample results, etc.
  • Virtual File Cabinet (VFC) - In the past two years, IDEM has scanned over 40 million public records. These documents are available on the Virtual File Cabinet. The entire catalog of IDEM public records is available as of June 2009. The VFC offers instant access to public records from any computer and eliminates the need for the public to submit requests for copies or travel to the Indianapolis office to review files. The VFC features a simple, fill-in-the-blank interface, much like any basic search engine. Users can search by various categories including facility information, document information or by using the enhanced search feature. The results can be sorted for easy location of the records.
  • Webinars - Technological advances have made it possible for IDEM staff to educate the community in new ways, saving Hoosiers time and money. These webinars are accessible through free, easily downloaded programs online. Online seminars are offered on an array of environmental topics, with training and public meetings accessible to interested Hoosiers around the state. The technology not only allows interested parties to view the presentations but to interact and ask questions as well. Upcoming webinars will be noted on the IDEM calendar page.
