The auto recycling/auto salvage business sector is over seventy-five years old, and has evolved into a sophisticated market and technology-driven industry that must constantly change in response to innovations in automotive technology and manufacturing techniques. To be competitive and profitable in today's markets, the auto recycling and salvage process must involve more than merely crushing wrecked, abandoned, and worn-out motor vehicles. The modern-day auto recycler must establish operating practices that realize the maximum market value of every end-of-life vehicle taken in, as well as provide environmental protection within the community. IDEM is committed to helping auto salvage recyclers ensure environmental protection.
In 2002, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) introduced the State Innovation Grant Program to support efforts led by state environmental agencies to test innovative approaches for achieving better environmental results and improved efficiency in permitting programs. In 2006, IDEM received an innovation grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to implement an environmental protection model called an ERP or Environmental Results Project to promote measurable improvement in compliance in the auto salvage sector.
Not only have these businesses earned the title Indiana Clean Yard, they each have achieved Gold Level Status. Gold Level status recognizes environmental excellence as well the facility’s commitment to sustain excellence and be environmental leaders. Congratulations to:

Your auto salvage business may submit an application at any time. IDEM hopes that businesses will be excited about this opportunity and will want to participate indefinitely.
