The goals of compliance in the area of water permitting are to ensure that the terms of permits and other enforceable agreements are met. Should violations or irregularities be uncovered, the Enforcement Section and/or the Office of Criminal Investigations may become involved. Their role is to set into motion procedures to address the violation and return the business or individual to a state of compliance.
The "Cross-connection Control & Backflow Prevention Manual" (mostly referred to by our regulated communities as the "red manual") has been revised (2009 Edition). The new 2009 Edition provides our regulated communities (public water systems), plumbers, irrigation contractors, industrial facilities, etc. with the latest update information regarding general guidelines for developing cross-connection control and backflow prevention in the State of Indiana. Also incorporated in this 2009 Edition, are new types of backflow devices (Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breaker and Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker) from the Foundation of Cross Connection and Hydraulic Research, University of Southern California. In addition to IDEM rule, we have included in this manual Indiana Administrative Codes, as administered by other state agencies such as Indiana State Department of Health and Department of Fire and Building Services (Uniform Plumbing Code), which address cross connection hazards that may exist within their regulated communities.
