Indiana's Education Roundtable

The Education Roundtable was brought together on an informal basis in 1998 and formalized by legislation in 1999, now codified at IC 20-19-4-2 et seq. with the charge of:

  • Ensuring the state has world class academic standards for student learning,
  • Aligning the state’s ISTEP+ assessments that measure student achievement with those standards,
  • Setting the passing scores for ISTEP+, and
  • Making ongoing recommendations focused on improving student achievement to the Governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction, General Assembly, Indiana State Board of Education, and others.

Recognized nationally as a model for other states, the Roundtable has helped Indiana make significant progress in such areas as: adopting academic standards that are among the very best in the country;  establishing Core 40 as the required high school curriculum for all students (with an opt-out provision);  making Core 40 the minimum course requirements for college admissions (Indiana’s 4-year universities); creating a comprehensive blueprint for education P-16; focusing on the very real challenge of high school dropouts; and advocating for full-day kindergarten.
