Reading Your Tax Bill

Woman ThinkingIt’s that time of year again – tax bills are in the mail. If you receive a bill and your mind floods with questions, there’s no need to fret. We’re here to give you the resources you need.

First, review the information you received from the Indiana Department of Revenue. Did you receive an AR-80 or an AR-40?

An AR-80 isn’t actually a bill. It’s a “notice of proposed assessment” and tells you the tax type, tax period, due date and amount due. It also gives an explanation of why you are receiving an assessment. Make sure all the information is correct. If it’s not, you can protest the assessment within 60 days of the due date. If you don’t protest or pay the proposed assessment, you’ll receive an AR-40. You’ll also receive an AR-40 if you underpaid your taxes this year.

An AR-40 is a demand notice for payment, and you have 10 days to pay. If you do not pay or respond to the AR-40, the bill moves to the tax warrant stage. A tax warrant is very serious and can affect your credit. Contact the department, pay the bill or set up a payment plan within the allotted 10 days.

After reviewing your assessment or bill, it’s common to still have questions. To ask your question face-to-face, visit one of the department’s 12 district offices around the state. They are located in Bloomington, Clarksville, Columbus, Evansville, Ft. Wayne, Kokomo, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Merrillville, Muncie, South Bend and Terre Haute.

Representatives at these district offices can address your concerns about a tax bill, discuss payment plans and help get you started with INtax Pay. INtax Pay is the gateway for Hoosiers to pay their tax bills and set up payment arrangements. This tool is available to taxpayers who owe individual income taxes, and businesses who conduct retail sales. You can also pay your tax bill while you’re there.
