Additional Security Features Protect Your Refund
Feb. 7, 2014 – TaxTalk Blog
The best way to prevent your refund from being stolen from identity theft criminals is by following precautionary measures to protect your sensitive information, like the tips we provided in our blog posts earlier this week.
However, to continue to ensure your Indiana tax refund goes to you and not a criminal, the department has implemented additional security features in its individual tax return processing procedures.
This year, all individual tax returns are reviewed by a sophisticated computer program. The department will be using the automated identity verification services of LexisNexis to help confirm the identities of all Hoosier taxpayers who are due a refund in 2014.
As an additional level of protection, some taxpayers will be selected to confirm their identities through an Identity Confirmation Quiz. These taxpayers will receive a letter from the Indiana Department of Revenue with instructions on how to take the quiz.
It is important that taxpayers who are required to take the quiz know they are not suspected of identity theft. The department is just trying to further protect taxpayers’ identities and their tax refunds.
Even with these increased security features, all refunds, including the refunds of taxpayers who took the Identity Confirmation Quiz, should still be received within 10 to 14 days if the return was electronically filed.
While the department’s additional security features are expected to save Hoosier taxpayers and the State of Indiana millions of dollars from tax fraud, it is still important that Hoosiers remain educated about ways they can protect their information at home from identity criminals. Review Monday’s and Wednesday’s TaxTalk blog posts and our Stop ID Theft website to make sure you’re on top of the best ways to protect your identity.
