Final Reminder to Businesses!
July 17, 2013 – TaxTalk Blog
Last year the Indiana state legislature passed a few laws that change the way Hoosier business taxpayers are required to file and pay sales and withholding taxes.
The one change that affected the majority of businesses is the e-filing mandate. Effective Jan. 1, 2013, all businesses in Indiana must file and pay their sales and withholding taxes electronically. Businesses that filed and paid using paper coupons in the past are now required to file and pay their sales and withholding taxes using the state’s INtax program or a third-party vendor.
The easiest solution to electronically file and pay your taxes is using INtax (www.intax.in.gov), Indiana’s free online tax program. With INtax, you can manage your Indiana sales and withholding taxes, as well as prepaid sales, metered pump sales, tire fees, aviation taxes and fuel taxes. It also gives you 24/7 access to business tax records, lets you file and pay online right up to the last deadline minute, and more.
Many taxpayers currently using INtax are highly satisfied with it. In fact, 93 percent of INtax users recently surveyed said they would recommend INtax to others.
If you are managing a business that simply cannot comply with this law because of religious beliefs or lack of access to the Internet or a computer, then you need to apply for an exception as soon as possible. To request an exception form, call the department at (317) 232-2337.
And if you are a tax professional who has clients who aren’t electronically filing and paying their taxes, you too can use INtax! In fact, the department offers a Tax Professional’s Guide to INtax so you can serve your clients efficiently and effectively.
But time is running out. Since coupons will no longer be mailed, it is important for you to either register for INtax or begin using a third-party agent to electronically file and pay before deadlines are missed (putting you at risk for penalty and interest charges).
To learn more about the e-filing mandate, access INtax tutorials, download the INtax QuickStart Guide, and/or to get started with INtax, visit www.in.gov/dor/4336.htm. Or, you can call our special INtax hotline at (317) 232-2337, and a representative will be happy to help you get started, filing, and paying your taxes today!
