April 10, 2012

Are you now approaching the tax filing deadline only to realize you’re not quite ready to file? Regardless of the reasons why you haven’t filed, and some are very legitimate, one fact remains: if you owe tax, and you can’t file your state return by the April 17 due date this year, you’ll need to file for an “extension of time to file.”

An extension of time to file gives you more timeto get all your information together so you can file. However, it does not extend the time to pay the tax you owe. And, remember, the tax due date changes this year only to April 17, 2011.

Here’s how an extension works:

  • Figure how much you expect to owe. You may ask: if you can figure out how much you expect you owe, then why get an extension? Why not just go ahead and file? Well, you may have to wait to file until you get all the necessary paperwork (like a W-2 form). Or maybe you need your spouse’s signature, and your spouse is out of town.
  • Pay at least 90 percent of the tax you expect to owe by April 17.
  • File your tax return by June, and pay any additional tax due at that time. While interest will be due with this payment, the penalty will be waived.

Here are two ways to file for an extension with Indiana:

  • Figure how much you owe and to pay online by credit card or electronic check, visit www.in.gov/dor/epay/index.html
  • Fill out Form IT-9, figure how much you owe and mail in your payment.

If you don’t have the money to pay taxes due, file your return anyway and pay as much as you can when you file. When you get your tax bill, call the Indiana Department of Revenue and request a payment plan for the remainder. The Department will work with you. If you think you will get a refund, be careful of waiting too long to file. You have only got a two-year window to file and to be eligible for a refund.

If you have any questions and would like to speak with a bilingual representative at the Indiana Department of Revenue, please call (317) 232-2240 (press 2 for Spanish) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can also visit the Department’s Web site at www.dor.in.gov/.
