You must mark your vehicle with a USDOT number if:
The registration receipt you receive will serve as proof of your registration.
If your vehicle weighs less than 10,000lbs., you are not required to get a USDOT number. If you transport passengers and your seating capacity is eight or fewer, you are not required to get a USDOT number.
First, you will need to apply online for a USDOT number. To do so, click here. You may also have to apply for a (MC) Motor Carrier number at the same website. Then you must wait 24 hours before going to www.ucr.in.gov to pay your annual UCR fees for interstate carriers. Finally, prepare for your safety audit conducted by the Motor Carrier State Police once you receive your USDOT number.
