If you already got a refund from the state this year you’re in good company…more than 1.9 million of your fellow Hoosier taxpayers have, too. So that’s why we got a little concerned when we started getting questions about refunds.

You see, there’s a rumor abuzz out there and we feel we have to set the record straight. The rumor? The Department of Revenue is holding refunds if they equal or exceed $3,000.

The truth? That’s just not accurate!

So what is happening? Well, there is no automatic hold on refunds. However, if a refund of $3,000 or more is claimed, our system is programmed to then do an additional comparison to a list of other conditions. For example, those conditions may include how much the taxpayer’s average refund has been in past years. Or, what was the total amount of income reported that’s associated with the refund? The list of additional conditions is a bit longer than that, but we think you get the idea.

This additional comparison in the system only takes seconds, or minutes at the most.

If no additional conditions are present, then the system proceeds with processing the refund for distribution back to the taxpayer, either in a paper check or through direct bank deposit into the taxpayer’s account.

However, if an additional condition is met, then the refund is moved over into a virtual “bucket” where it is held for a tax analyst – a Department employee – to take a closer look at it. This added review could take only a day, or it could take longer, depending upon what else we might need from the taxpayer, such as additional documentation, etc.

And, as further confirmation that refunds are being issued timely, we think it’s important to point out that the more than 1.9 million refunds issued to date is a typical number compared with previous years.
